KOTA BHARU, July 12 (Bernama) -- Zaharah Shuud, the widow of former Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) sub-editor Sulaiman Jaafar who died of a heart attack this afternoon, is thankful for and touched by the attention showered on her family after receiving a donation from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund today.

Zaharah, 54, said the contribution would come in handy to meet their daily expenses, especially for their two school-going children aged 19 and 13.

When met at the family residence in Kampung Cherang here tonight, Zaharah also sought forgiveness on behalf of her late husband for past deeds and wrongdoings.

Bernama Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin conveyed her condolences to Sulaiman's family, adding that his services and good deeds to Bernama would always be remembered.

Sulaiman, 65, died due to a heart attack at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZ) here at 3.50 pm today, four days after receiving treatment at the hospital after being hit by a motorcycle ridden by a student while he was walking home after performing the Subuh prayer on Monday.

Sulaiman suffered fractures and cracks in his spine and neck as a result of the accident.

He previously worked at Bernama from around 1979 to 1999, before joining The New Straits Times as a specialist writer before opting for the Voluntary Separation Scheme in 2018.

Bernama journalist Mohd Noor Iqram Rosli, representing the Kelantan Bernama Bureau Chief, presented the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA donation to Sulaiman’s next of kin.

Tabung Kasih@HAWANA was set up in conjunction with the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2023 to reach out to current and former journalists and media practitioners in need of assistance.

It is a Communications Ministry initiative implemented through Bernama.
